Creativity and creative thinking are not solitary endeavours; they thrive in an environment that encourages exploration, collaboration, and a positive mindset. Appreciative Inquiry is a powerful approach that can enhance creativity by focusing on strengths, positive experiences, and collective wisdom. There is a profound synergy between creativity, creative thinking, and the principles of Appreciative Inquiry, showcasing how this approach can foster innovation, teamwork, and personal growth.

Appreciative Inquiry (AI) is a collaborative and strengths-based approach to organizational and personal development that focuses on identifying and amplifying strengths, successes, and positive aspects to drive positive change and innovation. It was developed by David Cooperrider and Suresh Srivastva in the 1980s.

Appreciative Inquiry operates on the fundamental principle that organizations and individuals tend to grow in the direction of what they study and focus on. Instead of dwelling on problems and weaknesses, AI encourages organizations and individuals to explore and learn from their achievements and what works well. This cheerful and strengths-based approach helps foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.

The process of Appreciative Inquiry typically follows a 4-D cycle:

  • Discovery: In this phase, participants identify positive experiences and successes. They engage in dialogues, interviews, and other methods to discover the strengths and assets contributing to success.
  • Dream: This phase involves envisioning the future. Participants imagine what the future could look like when their strengths and values are fully realized.
  • Design: Participants move from envisioning to designing concrete plans and strategies for achieving their vision. They determine what actions need to be taken and what changes should occur.
  • Destiny (or Delivery): The plans and strategies developed in the Design phase are implemented in the final phase. They actively work towards their desired future by leveraging its strengths, values, and positive aspects.

Appreciative Inquiry can be applied in various contexts, including organizational change, leadership development, team building, and community development. It is often used to foster a positive corporate culture, increase employee engagement, and drive innovation by building on what is already going well within an organization.

The Intersection of Creativity and Appreciative Inquiry
